1. Emotional Intelligence and Empathy
Empathy and emotional intelligence are among the crucial skills of personal trainers. As a personal trainer, you will be interacting with people who are struggling in one way or another on a regular basis—Some may have trouble with carrying too much weight while others could have a hard time gaining even a little bit of muscle.
Honestly, it can be a lot, so you will have to be empathetic and honest at the same time: Knowing when to dish out some tough love and when to give them a hug and offer encouraging words is key. If a client is feeling overwhelmed, frustrated, or low on energy, a trainer with high emotional intelligence can adjust the workout or offer encouragement that helps the client overcome these emotions.
Sometimes, it’s not just about the weight—the pounds they carry could be a reflection of their emotional baggage in some cases. This is why learning at least the fundamentals of psychology will likely be helpful. That said, there are things that might be deep-seated in their psyche, so you may want to kindly refer them to a counselor if you feel that there are issues that are beyond your expertise in the emotional realm.
If you want to go the extra mile, you could even keep a list of the best counselors in the area.
